Task:Holding Olympic Games has positive effects. Others believe it is too money-consuming and the government should spend that money on other areas.

As the NO.1 sports competition worldwide, Olympic Games has been held consistently in different areas in the past. Many people believe this sports tradition should remain, because of its positive influences on the host country. However, others hold an opposite view that a large amount of money spent on it is unwise. Personally, I am in favor of the former view, and my reasons will be explored as below.

The first reason of supporting Olympic Games is that it provides opportunities for the modernization of social infrastructure a host city, which can leave a lasting heritage for the whole community. For example, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games stimulated the update of transportation system, such as the doubled number of highways, higher extension of subways and accommodation of airports, as well as an integration of between land and air traffic. Therefore, contributions to this city this great sporting event made include a smooth operation of internal market, a reliable and efficient mobility of persons and goods, and an increased cohesion of north China, socially and territorially.

Secondly, Olympic Games also plays a role of economic catalyst for local society. For one thing, during the process of the game, the inflow of tens of thousands of athletes, coaches, officers, journalists and audience would drastically boost domestic economy, such as the consumption of hotels, restaurants, commodities and souvenirs. For another, many sporting venues which are in operation after the event is over can be city icons and ideal attractions for tourists. Expectedly, with a consistent thriving of tourism, many kinds of industries and new job vacancies can be activated.

However, demerits of Olympic Games should not be overlooked, and the first concern is so-called white elephant phenomenon of construction. That is to say, without long-term planning or practicality, many venues which were built only for sports with little local interest, have now no use, or are crumbling. For example, In Greek today, the expensive and once-gleaming Olympic legacy has been a set of decaying structures. Swimming pools are given over to frogs, beach volleyball and softball arenas are all literally falling apart, baseball fields have been overtaken by weeds, dirt and trash is collection in the hallway and corners. In other words, the investment of billions of dollars into these debris is unacceptable and ironical for Greeks who are now being trapped in the economic crisis.

In conclusion, I believe its advantages overweigh the disadvantages. Although some sports facilities might not be used fully, the overall improvement of urban infrastructure and economic prosperity sparked by Olympic Games holding are more meaningful and valuable, to a large extent.

Task:The number of houses built per year in two cities between 2000 and 2009.

1. 注意极值的描述:最大值,最小值,交点等;

The bar chart describes the number of houses built in two neighboring cities, Derby and Nottingham, Between 2000 and 2009.

Overall, the number of houses that were erected in Derby exceeded upwards the quantity constructed in Nottingham. The trend for the former was decidedly upwards, with Derby experiencing a steady rise from 40 new houses in the first year, to just under 120 during the 2003. Over the next 4 years of decade, new houses construction in Derby remained constant at just under 120. This is in sharp contrast to the last two years when the number of houses that went up in Derby leapt, first to 280 and then to 350 houses.

Houses building in Nottingham, by comparison, was much more erratic. In the first two years of the decade, more houses were erected in Nottingham than in Derby. In 2002, however, construction declined to only 20. Over the next three years, houses numbers rose steadily, only to drop practically to zero in 2006. There was then a dramatic surge in 2007 with over 200 houses being built. While in 2008 saw house building in Nottingham plummeting to only 10, in 2009 the number of new houses rocketed to 270, a rise of more than 2600 % on the previous year.

Nowadays, children have too much freedom. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Between then and now, children have been given much freedom, so today's younger people do not pay enough attention to the older people's advice. It was then when the younger people were taught to be respectful of elders; and it is now when the younger generation appears to be exceedingly intelligent and impatient of restraint, increasingly ignoring the experience of the older generation. On balance, the two generations are making mistakes of different sorts in defining intelligence versus experience.

On the one hand, the error of youth is to believe that intelligence is a substitute for experience. Gradually, in an environment of freedom, they tend to turn a deaf ear to what their parents have to say about experience in life. For one thing, young people are better educated, but much of education is ineffective in teaching disciplines that would inspire youth to respect age. As a result, the images of parents, partly as teachers and partly as preachers that used to be at home, are behind the times. Instead, coming into fashion is the "know-all" adviser 24/7--the Internet. Naturally, most working parents being busy most of the time, it is common among children to seek advice by Googling or exchange advice with peers by checking Facebook.

On the other hand, the error of age is to believe that experience is a substitute for intelligence. It can be seen that sometimes parents unwisely try to give children undesirable pieces of advice like gift flowers, rather than teaching them to grow plants of experience on their own and in freedom. In fact, these days parents seldom give strict orders to children, knowing only too well that the declining parental authority is no match for children's rising freedom. A this point, hardly can parents force children to listen seriously to advice as if it were experience underdisguise. So when children's freedom prevails, it implies that kissing parents are many and scolding parents are few.

Now that the younger people have so much freedom that it is as easy for them to mistake intelligence for experience, as the older people mistake experience for intelligence. That is why the younger generation does not face the music by denying to pay attention to the older people's "authoritative" advice. After all, judging from the way how modern parents obey their children, there should be no mistake about who are the commanders-in-chief?

题目:Foreign visitors should pay more than local visitors for cultural and historical attractions. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

It is sometimes argued that tourists from overseas should be charged more than local residents to visit important sites and monuments. I completely disagree with this idea.

The argument in favour of higher prices for foreign tourists would be that cultural or historical attractions often depend on state subsidies to keep them going, which means that the resident population already pays money to these sites through the tax system. However, I believe this to be a very shortsighted view. Foreign tourists contribute to the economy of the host country with the money they spend on a wide range of goods and services, including food, souvenirs, accommodation and travel. The governments and inhabitants of every country should be happy to subsidise important tourist sites and encourage people from the rest of the world to visit them.

If travellers realised that they would have to pay more to visit historical and cultural attractions in a particular nation, they would perhaps decide not to go to that country on holiday. To take the UK as an example, the tourism industry and many related jobs rely on visitors coming to the country to see places like Windsor Castle or Saint Paul’s Cathedral. These two sites charge the same price regardless of nationality, and this helps to promote the nation’s cultural heritage. If overseas tourists stopped coming due to higher prices, there would be a risk of insufficient funding for the maintenance of these important buildings.

In conclusion, I believe that every effort should be made to attract tourists from overseas, and it would be counterproductive to make them pay more than local residents.

News media have become influential to our lives, and some people think that is a negative development. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, the expanding influence of news media on the society has been a heated social issue in debate. Some believe this trend is negative because the media controls minds of the public. Personally, I partially agree with this view, and my reasons will be explored as below.

The most worrying aspect of new media is that it overwhelms people’s daily lives. Actually, our lives of today are news-oriented, because of the 24-hour nonstop news cycles on TV, radio and Internet. Under such news bombardment, the information overload takes place, which means people’s attentions and minds have to be glued to focusing on and interpreting endless news, comments, gossips and rumors, necessary and unnecessary, no matter where they are, in workplaces, schools, buses or homes. As a result, news media is a huge distraction, which makes people exhausted and reduces their concentration and energy on their tasks or families.

Another big concern of news media is about its roles in manipulating people’s thoughts. Psychologically speaking, watching news media is a strong process of washing brain, in which the personal judgments of individual viewers might be removed and replaced with the media-established ideas. For example, for the purpose of politics, many influential newspapers, TV programs and online websites disclose the foibles of privacy, and even deliberately fabricate false rumors, scandals to diminish some political candidates in an election. Obviously, the cheatings and lies on news media are detrimental to the social equity and democracy, because they keep voters from thinking freely and independently.

However, the positive impact news media bring to our lives can never be ignored. In fact, the exposure to these news and reports can give the audience valuable messages and suggestions in day-to-day life. For example, the information about forecasts of weather and traffic situations in rush hours on regional newspapers or radio channels can instruct local residents to make proper schedules, plans and routers for travelling outside. In addition, reports about pressing social problems like epidemics, natural disasters, violence and crimes in streets also help to arouse the public’s awareness of the importance of improving education and health care systems, as well as the necessity of saving environment.

In conclusion, the demerits caused by news media override its benefits for the public. Although it can provide useful and practical information to the audience, it influences people in more negative ways, including an unbalanced life due to addiction in news, as well as the misunderstanding about social issues.
